Abstract

In competitive sports involving physical contact and the pursuit of scoring goals, both defense and offense hold equal importance for achieving victory. Specialists emphasize that teams whose members excel in defensive skills enhance the quality and appeal of the game. Unfortunately, defensive actions are often followed by spectators without much enthusiasm, and players usually see the defensive zone as a rest area after intense, aggressive attacks. Additionally, if a defender feels that committing a foul—whether obvious or subtle—will not result in a strict penalty, they may lack motivation to exert effort in training to master defensive skills. This is especially true since defensive training requires significant physical, mental, and psychological effort and is often perceived as tedious because it is performed without the ball. All these factors have led to a decline in focus on defensive training, particularly the fundamental skills of individual defenders, which in turn has caused noticeable weaknesses among players in this area. This situation motivated the researchers to study the reality of these skills among defenders in the Iraqi league by analyzing both the negative and positive technical defensive performances of individual defenders. Through this analysis, a comprehensive description of defenders’ capabilities can be obtained, which will undoubtedly contribute effectively to identifying weaknesses and addressing them by coaches.
